4 nursing homes in trouble for abuse, other incidents

Many of our New York readers are familiar with nursing homes in their home state, as well as those in neighboring areas such as Connecticut. When choosing a nursing home for a loved one, you expect that the person will be treated with a high level of care and respect at all times.

Recently, the state Department of Public Health fined four nursing homes for misconduct and incidents that resulted in injuries. Earlier this year, Arden House was fined more than $1,000 for an incident of physical abuse of a resident. In October of last year, a resident made a claim that a nurse’s aide pinched him or her in the groin area after undressing him or her. After an investigation by Arden House, the allegation of abuse was substantiated and the aide was fired.

In February, the Highlands Health Care Center received two fines from the Department of Public Health. They were first fined $1,090 in relation to a resident’s fall while the patient was left unattended in the bathroom.

Later the same month, the center was fined $1,160 for improper treatment of a resident with a pressure sore on a heel. The patient was not informed as to how to safely move the heel until after the injury occurred.

These are the types of nursing home abuse concerns that many people share, regardless of location. These incidents show that anything can happen at any time, even when a nursing home believes that its employees are doing everything they can to best care for its residents.
