Overly tired nannies risking injury

Overly tired nannies risking injury

No matter the position, all New York employees are at risk for injuring themselves while on the job. Nannies are no exception, even though they do not work around heavy machinery or in dangerous conditions. However, they typically work long hours and sometimes assist a family 24 hours a day while living in the home.

This kind of work can become all-consuming, leaving little time for sleep, rest and recuperation. When this happens, nannies and other domestic workers likely increase their risk of on-the-job accidents and injuries. When they are injured, domestic workers should be able to claim workers’ compensation.

In fact, a study from the National Domestic Workers Alliance, which surveyed thousands of employees from 71 countries, revealed that most housekeepers and live-in nannies only sleep a maximum of five hours each night. In addition, many live-in nannies do not have the luxury of a day off, which can add to the stress and weariness of the worker and increase the chances of an injury.

One former nanny of 17 years said she had to work at all hours to make sure a newborn baby’s needs were met within the Manhattan home in which she lived and worked. She said the largest problem was being able to get the sleep she needed.

Apart from injuries caused by lack of sleep, some housekeepers claim they have sustained hip, wrist, elbow and shoulder pain. Others have said they have rashes or skin irritation from some of the cleaning chemicals used in the home. Chemical irritation and burns are as high as 29 percent of all domestic workers.

If injuries do occur while on the job, employees are generally able to receive workers’ compensation, though it is always best to consult a New York workers’ compensation attorney to guarantee whether an employee can be compensated through workers’ compensation.
