Parents, child succumb to fatal injuries in Brooklyn crash

Williamsburg was the scene of a tragic accident earlier this month, when a man and his pregnant wife were struck and killed by a driver that police believe was traveling over 60 mph. While tragic enough on its own, this accident is even more heartbreaking because the couple’s son was delivered in an emergency operation, but later died from his own fatal injuries. It is still unknown how the driver of the cab in which the young family were traveling is doing, as well.

The man police believe was behind the wheel of the car is a 44 year old from Brooklyn. The driver had already been in trouble for dangerous driving — he was arrested and charged with drunk driving just last month — and it is unknown if he was legally able to drive at the time of the accident. Police are also unsure if the driver had been drinking prior to the accident, as he left the scene of the crash and drove home. In fact, while police believe they know who was behind the wheel of the fast-moving BMW, they still have not taken the 44 year old into custody.

New York City police and prosecutors are working with accident reconstruction experts to determine what happened in the moments leading up to the crash. It will take some time, but once there is a clear picture as to what happened, prosecutors can determine which criminal charges, if any, are most appropriate. As information emerges, the surviving family members of the 21-year-old soon-to-be-parents may also choose the file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver.

A friend of the driver’s has been in contact with him and the friend has said that it is clear that the driver is sorry for his action. He has also claimed that his friend plans on turning himself into police, but he has yet to do so.
