Central Islip crash kills 1, injures 2

A single-vehicle car accident has left one teenager dead and two others injured in Suffolk County, New York. The accident occurred just after midnight on Sept. 5, and while police have not determined the cause of accident as of yet, it is possible that speed played a factor.

The 19-year-old driver of the 2005 Acura TL lost control of the vehicle while traveling south on Lowell Avenue. The sports car shot off the road and slammed into several trees. An 18-year-old male passenger in the rear driver’s side seat suffered critical injuries. He was transported by emergency medical personnel to a Bay Shore hospital. He died later from his injuries.

Also injured in the crash was a 17-year-old boy. The driver and the 17-year-old were both seriously injured. The 17-year-old suffered a back injury, and the driver suffered a possible broken hip and arm. One lucky teenager, an 18-year-old, who was a passenger in the front seat, was not injured.

As the investigation continues, police are looking for anyone that might have seen the crash. A witness might help investigators better understand what happened. The driver has not been charged; however, that could change if the police determine that alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.

Even if the driver is not charged with a crime, the families of the injured teens or the family of the teen that died could pursue a civil suit against the driver. A criminal charge requires that a defendant is found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt; however, a civil case does not require the same burden of proof. A personal injury attorney can help those whose loved ones have been injured or killed learn more about their rights and options.
