Former professional baseball pitcher sues for police brutality

Police brutality is illegal no matter if it occurs in New York, Texas, California or any other state in the country.

Brandon Backe, a former MLB pitcher for the Houston Astros, has filed a lawsuit against the city of Galveston, Texas, as well as 15 police officers for lost wages totaling somewhere in the range of $12 to $15 million. The lawsuit alleges that he suffered injuries when he was beaten by police officers during a wedding party in 2008. As a result, his career as a Major League Baseball pitcher was ended.

During testimony in federal court, Backe discussed the night when police beat him and 11 other people. At some point during the event, Backe found the bride’s brother face down on the ground with a bloody face and a stun gun coming from his back.

Officers told Backe to step back, and according to him, he moved as far away as possible. This is when several officers beat him until he was bloody, which included kicks to the face.

During the altercation, he fell down and his shoulder hit the curb. This was the injury Backe claims ended his career as a MLB pitcher. He also suffered skull damage and a broken nose.

Despite the fact that he ignored the pain in hopes of avoiding surgery, he eventually gave in to the procedure.

There is no place in the world for police brutality. In this case, it appears that a MLB pitcher with a promising career ahead of him was beaten by police for no reason, thus forcing him to hang up his spikes forever. Seeking compensation won’t undo injuries suffered when police go too far, but it may make it possible for the victim to receive the ongoing treatment and medical care needed.

We had a situation where my mother had been neglected in a nursing home and the injuries were appalling. The Orlow Firm comforted us, knew what steps to take and got us the justice we deserved for our mother. I will be forever grateful to them for their compassion and hard work.

- Very happy with the results!
