A 26-year-old man was fatally struck by a white box truck while crossing E. 233rd Street in the Bronx. After hitting the man the truck driver did not even slow down, and continued on Barnes Avenue making a left turn. Police are now looking for the driver.
The young man was left bleeding in the street as the truck drove off. Emergency responders were called to the scene and took the man to Jacobi Medical Center where he later died. Although it is not clear if the truck driver was aware the man had been hit, the man’s friends and family could not understand how a driver could act so carelessly.
A man who lives at the intersection of the accident scene asked, “How do you do that? How do you not pull over?”
Those who have had loved ones injured or killed in hit and run accidents often ask similar questions. Motorists who hit others have a responsibility to stop and give assistance to the victims and alert the proper authorities, and it is difficult to understand why some drivers fail to do this.
If you or someone you loved has been the victim of a hit and run accident an experienced personal injury attorney can help to determine the driver responsible. If this is not possible, an attorney can help you pursue compensation through uninsured motorist insurance. Even injured pedestrians may be able to recover under their own car insurance policy.
Another option for some accident victims is to pursue compensation from the Motor Vehicle Accident Indemnification Corporation (MVAIC). This fund was set up to compensate those injured in accidents involving stolen vehicles, uninsured drivers and other situations where insurance coverage is not applicable.
